AV-1: violet 405 nm laser pen

The ACE Lasers AV-1 is a pen-style violet laser at 405 nm with 5–50 mW output, laser class 3B. It runs on two AAA batteries, included, and is the most accessible way to work with violet laser light. Its main attraction is fluorescence: aimed at highlighter ink, many plastics or glow-in-the-dark materials, the violet light makes them glow.

Know what to expect

Violet sits at the edge of human vision, so the dot looks dim compared with green. That is why the indicative range is shorter: approx. 30 m in daylight, approx. 150 m at dusk and approx. 500 m in the dark. The AV-1 is therefore not the laser for long-range pointing, bird control or astronomy; for those, choose the AG-1 green laser pen. Choose the AV-1 for the colour and the fluorescence effect, or as the third colour in your kit.

Batteries

The AV-1 runs on two standard AAA batteries. Remove them during longer storage. For a violet laser with more output and a rechargeable cell, see the AVP-1 Pro.

Do not underestimate violet

The low apparent brightness tempts people to treat violet lasers casually. The eye hazard follows from the output, not from how bright the dot looks. Use goggles rated for 405 nm; see our guide to laser safety glasses.

Safe use

This is a class 3B laser: direct exposure and reflections from glass, water or metal can injure the eye instantly. Never aim it at people, at the eyes of animals, at vehicles or at aircraft, and never into the sky near flight paths. Wear laser safety goggles rated for the wavelength, keep the laser away from children and store it securely. Sold to adults 18+ and businesses only; as the buyer you are responsible for complying with UK law. Read our laser safety guide.

The AV-1 is also part of the three-colour pen-style set. All violet models: violet laser pens.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AV-1 a blue or purple laser?
It emits violet light at 405 nm, which many people describe as blue or purple.
Why is the AV-1 dot dimmer than a green laser?
The eye is much less sensitive to 405 nm, so the dot appears dimmer at the same output. The eye hazard is not reduced.
How far does the AV-1 reach?
Indicatively approx. 30 m in daylight, approx. 150 m at dusk and approx. 500 m in the dark.
