Description

Pros

  • Distinctive violet-blue beam
  • Strong fluorescence effect for demonstrations
  • Full-size model with safety keys

Cons

  • Looks dimmer than green: shorter visible range
  • The dim appearance can lead users to underestimate the hazard

AVP-1 Pro: high power violet laser pointer at 405 nm

The ACE Lasers AVP-1 Pro is the full-size violet model in our Pro series: 405 nm, 50–500 mW, laser class 3B. Its beam has a distinctive violet-blue colour, and it causes many fluorescent materials to glow brightly. That makes it a favourite for demonstrations of fluorescence and for users who want a third colour alongside green and red.

What violet does differently

At 405 nm you are at the edge of the visible spectrum. The eye responds weakly to this light, so the dot looks dimmer than a green dot of the same output, and the visible range is shorter: indicatively approx. 50 m in daylight, approx. 300 m at dusk and approx. 1 km in the dark. In return, fluorescent surfaces light up where the beam hits them. For maximum range, bird control or star pointing we recommend a green Pro laser instead.

Battery and charging

The AVP-1 Pro shares the 18650 cell with the AGP-1, AGP-3 and ARP-1 Pro. A spare PowerFox 18650 2-pack therefore fits all four. Charge the supplied cell fully before first use, and use a charger designed for lithium-ion cells.

The hazard is not in the brightness

Because violet looks dim, users sometimes treat it more casually than green. Do not: the risk to the eye is determined by the output, not by how bright the dot appears. Wear goggles rated for 405 nm, as explained in our laser safety glasses guide.

Safe use

This is a class 3B laser: direct exposure and reflections from glass, water or metal can injure the eye instantly. Never aim it at people, at the eyes of animals, at vehicles or at aircraft, and never into the sky near flight paths. Wear laser safety goggles rated for the wavelength, keep the laser away from children and store it securely. Sold to adults 18+ and businesses only; as the buyer you are responsible for complying with UK law. Read our laser safety guide.

Also available: the compact AVP-2 Pro Mini, the Pro set in three colours and all high power violet laser pointers.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AVP-1 Pro a blue laser?
It emits at 405 nm, which appears as a deep violet-blue. Many people call it a blue or purple laser.
Why does the violet dot look weaker than a green one?
The eye is not very sensitive to 405 nm. The output is the same range as the green Pro models; only the perceived brightness is lower.
Which goggles do I need?
Goggles that are rated for 405 nm. Goggles for green lasers do not automatically protect against violet.
