Long Range Laser Pointers for Outdoor Work and Signalling

When you need to show someone a point hundreds of metres away, or make your position visible at dusk, a long range laser pointer does what a torch cannot. Outdoor professionals, team leaders and search and rescue volunteers use it to point, mark and signal. This page explains which ACE laser reaches furthest and how to use it safely.

What determines how far a laser reaches

Three things decide how far a laser dot or beam can be seen: the output, the colour and the conditions. Output is measured in milliwatts; our pen-style lasers deliver 5–50 mW and our Pro models 50–500 mW. Colour matters as much: the eye is far more sensitive to green (532 nm) than to red or violet, so a green laser is visible much further at the same output. And the conditions, from bright daylight to full darkness, from clear air to haze, change everything. That is why we always give range as indicative.

Indicative: depends on conditions (light, weather, surface).

Typical outdoor uses

  • Pointing out distant objects: show a colleague exactly which tree, fence post, gate or feature you mean across a field or valley.
  • Coordinating teams at dusk: indicate a route, an assembly point or a target area without shouting or radio chatter.
  • Signalling your position: in an emergency, a laser dot or beam can help others locate you at night. Aim it at the ground or a surface near searchers, never at people or aircraft.
  • Guiding walks and outdoor activities: point out landmarks at dusk or stars after dark; see also lasers for astronomy.
  • Land management: combined with bird control on large areas.

Which model to choose

  • Maximum range: the AGP-3 Pro. Green, 50–500 mW, rechargeable 18650, safety keys.
  • Range and compactness: the AGP-2 Pro Mini, only 12 cm long.
  • Two signalling colours: a green Pro plus the ARP-1 Pro red, or the Pro set in three colours.
  • Simple kit-bag laser: the AG-1 on AAA batteries; no charging needed, and you simply store it with the batteries removed.

Working outdoors with a laser: good practice

  1. Know what lies behind your target. A dot that misses a fence post continues to whatever is behind it.
  2. Avoid reflective surfaces: water, glass, vehicle windows, wet rock and metal roofs.
  3. Keep the beam below head height of anyone in the area and never sweep it across a road or path.
  4. Switch off between uses; short bursts are enough.
  5. Carry spare power: a charged 18650 batteries (2-pack) or a fresh set of AAA batteries.

Safety

All ACE lasers are powerful tools. Never aim them at people, at the eyes of animals, at vehicles or at aircraft, and never into the sky near flight paths. Wear goggles rated for the wavelength, keep the laser away from children and store it securely. As the buyer you are responsible for complying with UK law. See our laser safety guide and the article high-power laser range by colour for more background.

Frequently asked questions

What is the longest range laser pointer you sell?
The green Pro models (AGP-3, AGP-1, AGP-2): indicatively a dot on objects at approx. 500 m in daylight, approx. 2 km at dusk and a beam visible up to approx. 5 km in the dark.
Is a laser useful for emergency signalling?
It can help others locate you at night. Aim the dot at the ground or a surface near searchers, never at people, vehicles or aircraft.
Does more mW always mean more range?
Not on its own. Colour matters as much: a green laser is visible further than a violet one of higher output.
